A stunning new garden space created by six William Brookes School students was visited by over 150 visitors as part of last week’s Open Gardens Trail in Much Wenlock.
This is the first time the school has taken part in the event, joining dozens of private gardens in Much Wenlock in raising money for local charities. As well as touring the outdoor space, visitors were also treated to music performed by the school’s students, as well as Jackfield Brass Band.
The new garden space was created by six of the school’s City & Guilds students, who worked collaboratively with school staff to design and create the outdoor area for the whole school community to enjoy.
City & Guilds qualifications are a popular part of the school’s curriculum, offering students the opportunity to develop vocational skills in a variety of subjects.
David O’Toole, CEO of The 3-18 Education Trust, visited the event on Sunday, and said:
“Today was a wonderful celebration of community spirit, made even more special by the sunshine and the music of the local brass band. The gardens are a real credit to Mark Jones, Ruth Shaw and the children who have worked on them through their City & Guilds qualifications. Well done to everyone involved, this is exactly what makes our schools the heart of their communities.”
William Brookes School is also home to a bespoke SEND hub garden which is used by students for games and gardening whilst developing skills, resilience and patience.
Following the success of the event, the school plans to take part each year.
