Celebrating apprenticeships: “I wanted to build practical skills in a hands-on environment while gaining a formal qualification.”

Sam Dodington, Building Projects Assistant at The 3-18 Education Trust, explains his motivations for undertaking a Property Maintenance Apprenticeship.

Name: Sam Dodington
Team: The 3-18 Education Trust
Current role: Building Projects Assistant
Training course: Property Maintenance Apprenticeship

What are your motivations for starting an apprenticeship?
“I wanted to build practical skills in a hands-on environment while gaining a formal qualification. Property maintenance is a field where experience really matters, and an apprenticeship offered the perfect balance of learning and doing. It also gave me a clear pathway into a skilled trade with long-term career potential.”

How is this helping with your current role?
“The apprenticeship has helped me understand the technical side of maintenance work—from plumbing and electrics to health and safety regulations. I’m able to take on more responsibilities within the Estates Team and contribute more confidently to day-to-day tasks. It’s also improved my problem-solving and time management skills.”

How will the apprenticeship support your future career development?
“It’s laying the foundation for a career in facilities management or property services. With the qualification and experience I’m gaining, I’ll be well-positioned to move into more senior roles or even specialise in areas like electrical or plumbing. It’s also helping me build a professional network and a strong work ethic.”

What you are your tips for balancing work and study?

  • Stay organised – keep a planner or calendar to track deadlines and shifts.
  • Use quiet periods at work to review materials or jot down reflections.
  • Communicate regularly with your tutor and manager so they know how to support you.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions – learning on the job is part of the process!

“I’ve found the apprenticeship to be a great way to grow both professionally and personally. It’s rewarding to see the impact of my work and know I’m building a career with real opportunities. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys practical work and wants to learn while earning.”
