James Kaul, Finance Assistant Apprentice in the Trust Central team, started a Level 2 Accounting apprenticeship in 2026.

Name: James Kaul
Team: The 3-18 Education Trust Central Team
Current role: Finance Assistant Apprentice
Training course: AAT Level 2 Accounting
“I was drawn to the apprenticeship route because I wanted to gain practical experience alongside my learning. Working as a Finance Assistant Apprentice has allowed me to effectively develop my skills. The expert knowledge I receive from the Finance team has supported me in this role.
The apprenticeships in finance and accounting are clear and well structured, which makes me confident about future career progression.
The apprenticeship has equipped me with the knowledge that I can then bring into practice at the office. Being in the office has allowed me to build my confidence using accounting software which is an important part of my role. This is why I believe apprenticeships are such a good opportunity because the theory and practical experience complement each other well.
The learning has helped me to assist the Finance team with daily tasks and has developed me into a competent Finance Assistant Apprentice.
The AAT Level 2 qualification is providing me with the foundations of accounting and finance. From there, I have a clear career progression going onto my AAT Level 3 and becoming a fully qualified Finance Assistant.
My long-term plan would then be to complete my AAT Level 4 and progress to chartered qualifications.
The career development is well structured which gives me a clear plan for the future.
My top three tips to balance work and study
- Stay organised
Whatever method you prefer whether it’s making a list, putting reminders on your phone, making a mental note. Staying organised will help you manage your workload well and help you know what to prioritise. - Have a hobby
For me it would be going to the gym, meeting friends, or playing PS5. You need some time to enjoy yourself and recharge. Being happy and enjoying yourself will impact your quality of work. - Being honest when you need help
Balancing work and study can be hard when your responsibilities grow and submission dates approach. Communicating your needs to your manager will allow them to support you and help ease the workload so you can focus on what is important.
