Alternative teacher training routes

Teaching provides a unique opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of children and young people, but what if teaching wasn’t your initial career choice? Whether you’re already working in a school or considering a career change, there are several alternative routes into teaching available.

School-led salaried route

Eligibility Criteria

If you are already working in one of our schools either in an unqualified teaching role or as support staff, you may be eligible to apply for a teaching vacancy at the same school. You must already have an undergraduate degree and meet any specific subject or grade criteria.

Programme Benefits

This route offers you the opportunity to undertake training in a school you already know well. You will continue to be employed by the school and receive a salary. The school must agree to cover any salary above the funded grant level.

Alongside teacher training at your school, you will also spend in a second school to broaden your experience. You will also complete Masters-level assignments and engage in professional development and subject knowledge sessions as directed by the awarding university.

Qualifications Awarded

On successful completion of this route, you will be awarded a PGCE.

Teacher Degree Apprenticeships (TDAs)

Eligibility Criteria

You do not require an undergraduate degree to be eligible for a TDA. This route is ideal for someone who is already working in a school. A TDA offers the opportunity to work alongside studying.

Programme Benefits

The teacher degree apprenticeship is a four-year, full-time course that lets you train as a teacher with an accredited teacher training provider. During a TDA, you will work in a school and earn a salary. The current offer is for TDAs in secondary maths. Other subjects will be added in the future. You will typically work in a school for three days a week and spend two days at a local university (Staffordshire University is our nearest local provider).

Qualifications Awarded

On successful completion of this route, you will be awarded a bachelor’s degree.

QTS Apprenticeship route

Eligibility Criteria

You must already have an undergraduate degree to be eligible for a QTS apprenticeship. This route offers the opportunity to work alongside studying. The school must agree to use their apprenticeship levy for this route.

Programme Benefits

The QTS apprenticeship is offered full-time for one year or part-time over two years. During your training, you will work in a school and earn a salary. You will typically work in a school for three days a week and spend two days at university. Coventry University is one of our local providers.

Qualifications Awarded

On successful completion of this route, you will be awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
