Multi-faith week at Much Wenlock Primary School

As part of the Much Wenlock Primary School’s commitment to unlocking the potential of every child, the school believe it is essential for all children to be exposed to a rich variety of cultural experiences.

Last week, the school held a multi-faith Week which saw it welcoming a variety of visitors and taking trips out to several religious sites. The children had many opportunities to learn about different faiths, beliefs, and traditions.

Highlights from multi-faith week

The week started with a visit from an Imam, who spoke about the values of Islam and answered some fantastic, respectful questions from the children.

Reverand Lisa Harper, from the Church of England, spoke about Christianity and the importance of its teachings in people’s lives.

Cathy Landau, a member of the Jewish faith, visited to share her experiences, explaining key aspects of Judaism, and answering questions from the children.

Years 5 and 6 participated in an online Q&A session with a member of the Jewish community. They had watched a virtual tour of a synagogue earlier in the week, which helped them come up with thoughtful, respectful questions for the session.

Dr. Simon Nightingale, a Humanist, spoke to Years 2 – 6 about Humanist beliefs and how kindness and respect are values that unite all of us, regardless of faith.

Jemima Neale, a parent in our school community, shared her faith as a Jehovah’s Witness and gave a fascinating talk to the children, helping to broaden their understanding.

Year 2 and 3 enjoyed an exciting trip to a mosque, where they learned about its importance as a place of worship and saw how faith is practiced in everyday life. The children also visited the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre, where they explored how history and culture are connected to beliefs and traditions.

Sharing learning

The week ended with a whole school assembly, where each class showcased what they had learned. From beautiful artwork and creative writing to insightful presentations, the children were so proud to share their hard work. Across all the different faiths and beliefs, the children discovered key similarities, such as kindness, respect, and the importance of helping others – values that we can all carry forward in our daily lives.

Rachel Howell-James, Acting Headteacher, commented: “We’re so proud of the children for their enthusiasm and thoughtful approach throughout the week. Thank you for your continued support – Multifaith Week has been such a success because of it!”
