Year 3 pupils from Coleham Primary School teamed up with over 500 artists and schoolchildren to create a large-scale mosaic mural titled ‘Wrekin Tales’.

Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project united artists and pupils from across Shropshire to craft a mosaic that depicts the natural environment around the Flaxmill Maltings in Shrewsbury.
As part of the project, pupils from Coleham Primary School participated in an inspiring storytelling workshop led by local storyteller Jake Evans. Local artist Sarah Evans then guided the children through a creative session to design the artwork for mosaic square number 38.
The grand unveiling
The mosaic was officially unveiled by the Mayor of Shrewsbury on Saturday (pictured).
Known as the grandparent of skyscrapers, Flaxmill Maltings opened in 1797 as a purpose-built flax mill. It was the first multifloored iron-framed building in the world. Its pioneering frame is what makes it an internationally important industrial heritage site. The maltings closed in 1987, and after falling into disrepair the buildings were eventually rescued, repaired and restored by Historic England, with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Well done to all involved for your contribution to Shrewsbury’s community art scene!
